Alumni 1964 - Prof. Emeritus Dr. Lim Koon Ong

Born in Malacca, Prof. Emeritus Dr. Lim Koon Ong (aka K.O.Lim),  received his primary school education at the Tranquerah English School and his secondary school education at the Gajah Berang Secondary English School and the Malacca High School.  Prof. Emeritus Dr. Lim , a Fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics Malaysia, was the First Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Industry & Community Network, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He began his career as a lecturer in that university in December 1976.

In the field of Biophysics Prof. Dr. Lim was one of the world’s first to look into the mechanical properties of human heart valves. He has also published papers on blood flow as well as heart sounds. In the area of Bioenergy, Prof. Dr. Lim was one of the first in the country to investigate and advocate the use of biomass as a renewable source of energy.

Prof. Emeritus Dr.Lim graduated with a BSc (First Class Honours) and a BEd from Queen’s University, Canada and a PhD from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.  While at USM, Prof. Dr. Lim served as Deputy Dean and Acting Dean of the School of Physics, Chairman of the Matriculation Programme (Physics), Chairman of the Engineering Physics Programme as well as Co-ordinator of the Diploma in Laboratory Technology Programme.

Besides his administrative duties in the School of Physics, Prof. Dr.Lim was also active in numerous university level committees. For example he served as a Senate member for a total of 20 years. In addition, Prof .Dr. Lim was also the Head of a Residential College as well as the Acting Research Dean of the Fundamental Sciences Platform.

While at the School of Physics, Prof. Dr. Lim successfully introduced three new programmes, i.e. the Applied Physics Programme, the Diploma in Laboratory Technology Programme and the Engineering Physics Programme.  

Prof. Dr. Lim’s research interests are in Biophysics and Bioenergy or Biofuel. To date he has published more than a hundred papers in international journals, refereed proceedings as well as in local journals. He has also written 4 books in Bahasa Malaysia. In the field of Biophysics Prof. Dr. Lim was one of the world’s first to look into the mechanical properties of human heart valves. He has also published papers on blood flow as well as heart sounds. In the area of Bioenergy, Prof. Dr. Lim was one of the first in the country to investigate and advocate the use of biomass as a renewable source of energy.

Besides his academic and administrative duties, Prof. Dr. Lim is also active in committees outside the University. He was once invited by the Nobel Committee for Physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to propose candidates for the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics. In April 2010 he was appointed as the Head of the Science and Mathematics Cluster, the National Council of Professors by the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Prof .Dr.  Lim was a Colombo Plan Scholar and he was also awarded various other fellowships such as the Nellie Farthing Memorial Fellowship, the Canadian Heart Foundation Fellowship, the Ontario Heart Foundation Fellowship and the ASAIHL Fellowship.  Prof. Dr. Lim was awarded the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (1994) and the Bintang Cemerlang Negeri (2009) by His Excellency the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, and the Darjah Seri Sirajuddin Perlis (2010) by His Majesty the Raja of Perlis. In March 2011 Universiti Sains Malaysia conferred upon him the title of Professor Emeritus.
