Harm reduction cigarettes - worse for passive smokers

21 October 2010
If you are a smoker, you will be causing more harm to your non-smoker friends if you are smoking light cigarettes in an enclosed environment.
Tobacco companies have introduced "harm reduction cigarettes" in order to reduce the toxicity of cigarettes smokes.  These are often marketed as "mild" or "light" cigarettes.
A recent study at the University of California suggests toxicity from passive smokeing is even higher with these harm reduction cigarettes.
They measured the effects of mainstream smoke (inhaled by smokers) and sidestream smoke (inhaled by passive smokers) on embryonic stem cells, comparing light cigarettes and conventional cigarettes.
It is of course best for everyone all round if you do not smoke.
